Many prominent Rails developers have jumped on the BDD bandwagon, and with good reason! It’s a great workflow and values clarity, small steps, database-independence, and self-documenting code.

If Test::Unit doesn’t make sense to you, or if you want to write better code, this is the place to start.

This 55 minute screencast is the first of a 3-part series on RSpec. You’ll learn how to install and configure RSpec. We’ll walk through a simple project. Then we’ll install RSpec in a Rails application and start writing examples for a simple model.

NOTE The code download has been updated to work with the latest Rails 2.1 and RSpec 1.1.4.

Part 2 is available now and covers mocking, stubbing, and custom matchers. Part 3 will cover controllers, views, and auxiliary tools.

Skills

This screencast assumes that you are familiar with Ruby and the basics of writing a Rails application. The Rails from Scratch screencast covers these concepts.

What People Are Saying

“I just started programming about six months ago and I've peeled through a lot of books and other materials in that time. Nothing has been as helpful to me as PeepCode.” Neil Rahilly
“It's not often that I am excited about spending money. I've even managed to convince myself that I don't need an iPhone, but I find myself checking several times a day for the new PeepCode screencasts and the opportunity to spend another nine dollars.” Phil Peterman, Traffic Engineering, eMarketSouth
“I love the idea [of RSpec] but haven't really been able to make it work for me, but being able to look over your shoulder while you worked the process helped tremendously. I think my BDD issues were all about workflow because I would skip around and not actually write the tests first, then struggle with the API when I did.” Jeff Whitmire, Grockit
“This kind of learning really works for me, and a good amount of content is covered in each episode. I felt a little strange paying for a screencast, but after buying 3, I feel it's been money well spent!” Thomas, developer

What People Are Saying About PeepCode

“PeepCode is awesome!” Tim O'Reilly, O'Reilly Media
“I suspect there are a lot of smart DF readers out there who know nothing about the Unix-y aspects of Mac OS X, would like to, but never found a good way to get started. This screencast is it.” John Gruber, Daring Fireball
“Mercurial is just what I was looking for. Happy to pay to support people making such high-quality and informative screencasts.” Jason Kottke
“Absolutely fantastic - I haven't seen a PeepCode screencast before and I'm super impressed with the level of graphics/audio...I just finished it and it really is a great intro. Well done.” David Kaneda, author of jQTouch
“These things are fantastic and the price is a steal. I strongly urge you to support this effort and buy the episodes. What a terrific way to learn!” Scott Barron, Rails Core Committer
